Welcome to Fairview Baptist Church.
As pastor of this vibrant church let me try to put into words something of the rich experience of Christian community that we enjoy. Here are some key points that will hopefully answer some questions you might have about our church:
- Fairview Church is like a small village, with a great diversity of ages, ethnicities, styles and visions for the spiritual life.
- Our worship, though informal, tends towards the more traditional expressions of liturgy, usually featuring hymns and anthems from our choir.
- Prayer is the foundation from which we understand the Christian life. We feature a monthly Contemplative Service (third Saturday of each month) as well as retreats and seminars on the encouragement of the practice of prayer.
- We are committed to the encouragement and nurturing of our children and offer regular Sunday School for those under High School age. Our Youth Group also meets regularly and are an important part of our community life.
- The arts, in many forms, are a natural expression of our community. Besides our choir, we also have a small orchestra of string and wind players who accompany us at our Communion services (first Sunday of each month). Our Celtic group is a regular feature of our quarterly Coffee Houses. We also host a weekly drop-in painting group which exhibits original work in the permanent art gallery we have in our lounge. Drama or “scripted sermons” are also an important part of our communication of the gospel. Our Youth Group has formed its own Drama Team which creates, produces and performs plays as part of our regular service.
- We have a variety of Bible study groups that meet in homes around the city and use the sermon series as a curriculum for deeper study and fellowship.
As pastor I am committed to the individual Christian. I am trained in spiritual direction and regularly meet one-on-one with congregants for the encouragement of their spiritual growth. I’ve included below a “statement of purpose” that appears on our weekly bulletin. Fairview Baptist Church has served Vancouver since 1922. We believe that we have been called together as a community of faith to bring glory to God through worship, by caring for and encouraging others in love, by introducing people to a relationship with Jesus, by committing to the will of God in our lives, and by serving those beyond ourselves.
